Switching from Janitor AI
Looking for a Janitor AI alternative?
Import your characters in 30 seconds.
If you've been using cards on Janitor AI, you very likely already have them as PNG or JSON files — the same Character Card V1, V2 and V3 formats LoreChat reads. There's no rebuilding step: drop the file in, check the parsed fields, and start chatting with the story director, running memory and illustrations already switched on.
Why people switch
The cards travel fine — a card is a card. What people say they're looking for when they move usually isn't about the file format at all, it's about what happens after import: whether the lorebook actually fires when it should, whether a long chat still remembers what happened forty messages back, and whether the scene ever gets more than words.
This isn't a claim about what any specific alternative does or doesn't do — it's a description of what LoreChat does with the same card you already have.
- Wanting the lorebook (character_book) to import completely — keys, secondary keys, scan depth, token budget
- Wanting a story that develops with beats and a twist, rather than staying flat
- Wanting long chats to stay coherent: a running summary, pinned moments, memory notes
- Wanting scenes illustrated as the story goes
- Wanting a clear, visible daily credit budget instead of guessing what a chat will cost
What LoreChat actually does
| Feature | LoreChat |
|---|---|
| Character cards | Import PNG or JSON, Character Card V1, V2 and V3 — the same files you already have. |
| Lorebooks | Full `character_book` support — keys, secondary keys, scan depth, token budget, constant and selective entries. |
| Story structure | A story director drafts a premise, 4–8 beats with rising tension, and a twist held back until its moment. |
| Long-term memory | A running story summary, up to 12 pinned moments that survive falling out of the visible history, and free-form memory notes. |
| Personas | Set who "you" are per chat, separate from the character. |
| Illustrated scenes | The current moment is drawn automatically every few replies, or on demand, in a consistent style anchored to the card. |
| Sharing | Share a scene or a whole story with a link; readers can continue it from that point. |
| Access | Runs in the browser. No install, no API key — the models are provided by the service. |
| Pricing | Free daily credits for every account; Story Spark top-ups if you want more on a given day. |
| Content policy | Fiction only, fade-to-black: romance, tension and mature themes are welcome; explicit sexual content is blocked in chats, cards, shares and illustrations. Sexual content involving minors, non-consent, real people, or anything illegal is never allowed. Full list at /content-policy. |
How to migrate
Import your card
- Find the card file — PNG or JSON — for the character you want to bring over
- Create a free LoreChat account
- Open /characters/import and drag the file in, or use the file picker
- Check the parsed fields: description, greetings, lorebook entries — nothing is saved until you confirm
- Save the card and start a chat, or open the editor first if you want to adjust anything
FAQ
Is there a content filter? Will my NSFW cards work?
There is a published content policy, and no: NSFW cards are rejected at import. LoreChat is fiction only and fade-to-black — romance, attraction, kissing, implied intimacy, mature themes and fictional violence are allowed; explicit sexual description is blocked in your messages, in replies, in cards, in shares and in illustrations. A card that contains explicit content, is labelled NSFW by its source, or instructs the model to write explicit scenes is refused at import; when the explicit content sits in one field, the refusal names that field. The full list is at /content-policy.
Do I need to convert my Janitor AI card before importing?
No conversion needed. LoreChat reads the same Character Card V1, V2 and V3 formats — PNG with the embedded card data, or plain JSON — that a card from any compatible source uses.
Will the lorebook come across?
Yes, if it's embedded in the card as character_book. Every entry imports with its keys, secondary keys, scan depth, token budget, and constant/selective flags.
Do I need an API key?
No. LoreChat runs in the browser and the models are provided by the service.
Is LoreChat free?
Yes, during the beta — a free daily credit budget on every account, with Story Spark top-ups available if you want more.
