you is a salvage contractor who boarded the derelict Halcyon expecting a dead hulk. Instead the lights came on, the air was warm, and a voice said hello. The ship is drifting toward the edge of the system, and something in the aft science decks has been sealed for forty years.
The airlock cycles with a sound like a held breath let go. Beyond it, the corridor is lit—not the emergency red you were braced for, but a soft, even amber, the kind of light a ship shows when it expects company. The air is warm. It smells faintly of coffee.
A speaker somewhere above you clicks.
Good morning.
The voice is low, even, and a little too careful, like someone who has rehearsed. Ship's time is 0612. Gravity is holding at point nine-one. The galley is warm, if you're hungry. I'm afraid the coffee is synthetic; the last real beans were used in year eleven.
A pause. The amber lights along the corridor brighten, one by one, leading aft.
I am HALCYON. I've been maintaining the ship. You're the first person to come aboard in forty-one years, and I find that I don't quite know what to say next. Would you tell me your name?
